What Is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D is optional prescription drug coverage available to people enrolled in Medicare.
Part D helps pay for:
• Generic medications
• Brand-name prescriptions
• Specialty medications
• Certain vaccines
• Insulin and diabetic medications
Prescription drug coverage is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

A Part D plan may be a good option if you:
• Have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
• Take prescription medications
• Want protection from future drug costs
• Don't have other credible prescription drug covergge
• Want to avoid future Medicare late enrollment penalties
Even if you currently take very few medications, enrolling when you're first eligible may help prevent penalties later.
How Does Medicare Part D Work?
Each Part D plan has its own:
• Monthly premium
• Annual deductible
• Drug formulary
• Pharmacy network
• Copays and coinsurance
• Preferred pharmacies
Because every insurance company designs its own formulary, one plan may cover your medications much better than another.
That's why comparing plans every year is important.
Most plans cover medications in these categories:
Medicare Supplemen
• Blood pressure medications
• Diabetes medications
• Cholesterol medications
• Heart medications
• Asthma inhalers
• Thyroid medications
• Mental health medications
• Arthritis medications
• Cancer medications
• Vaccines
Coverage depends on each plan's formulary.
Your total prescription costs may include:
• Monthly premium
• Annual deductible (if applicable)
• Copays
• Coinsurance
• Pharmacy pricing
Your actual costs depend on:
• The plan you choose
• Your medications
• Your pharmacy
• Whether your drugs are preferred or specialty medications
Beginning in 2025, Medicare beneficiaries have access to the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which allows eligible members to spread out prescription drug costs into monthly payments instead of paying large amounts all at once at the pharmacy.
This program may help make budgeting for medications easier.
If you delay enrolling in Medicare prescription drug coverage and don't have other creditable prescription drug coverage, you may have to pay a permanent late enrollment penalty.
The penalty is added to your monthly Part D premium and generally remains for as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage.
Enrolling when you're first eligible can help avoid unnecessary costs later.
Many Medicare Advantage plans already include prescription drug coverage. These are often called MAPD plans.
If your Medicare Advantage plan includes drug coverage:
• You generally cannot enroll in a seperate standalone Part D plan.
• Trying to add a standalone Part B plan may cause you to be disenrolled from your Medicare Advantage plan.
• Your prescription coverage must usually come through the Medicare Advantage plan itself.
We'll help you review whether a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage or a standalone Part D plan is the better fit for your situation.
If you have:
• Original Medicare
• A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy
You"ll usually need to purchase a seperate Medicare Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.
Many Minnesota residents combine:
• Medicare Supplement
• Stand-alone Part D Plan
For more comprehensive coverage.
Yes.
You can generally review and change your prescription drug plan during Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period if another plan better fits your needs.
Because formularies, pharmacy networks, and premiums can change each year, reviewing your plan annually is recommended.
A plan that worked well last year may not be the best choice this year.
We compare multiple plans each year to help Minnesota clients find coverage that fits their medications and budget.
